The Engineering workgroup provides engineering and management oversight for two closed solid waste disposal sites within Josephine County: Marlsan Landfill and Kerby Landfill. Marlsan Landfill was last used in the late 1960s and is located just east of the City of Grants Pass. The landfill is approximately 10 acres in size and has contaminated the groundwater beneath with low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs from the groundwater beneath the Marlsan Landfill have not exceeded maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) established by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The County has joined the Voluntary Cleanup Program established by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for the remediation of Marlsan Landfill. Currently a risk assessment is being performed to determine the risk to human health and the environment. Kerby Landfill, near the town of Kerby, is a trench fill disposal site 10 acres in size and was closed in 1993. The site is being monitored per a Solid Waste Permit issued by DEQ. No impending groundwater contamination issues are present at Kerby Landfill.
